SBDC Client Gets SBA Loan to Expand Business

Karen Conroy, President of Fundraising for a Cause, Inc. came to the Florida Small Business Development Center at the University of South Florida (USF SBDC) for assistance in finding the financing necessary to expand her business. Although Conroy had met with several bankers already, she had not yet found a lender willing to make her company the loan because of their concerns regarding the economy.

At the USF SBDC she met with Jim Parrish, Certified Business Analyst and a former Senior Business Lender. Parrish made suggestions for improving her business plan in order to better “sell” the economic viability of her business expansion. Also, he provided her with referrals to the leading SBA lenders in the Tampa Bay area.

Community Bank was one of those referrals and Conroy was successful in obtaining the financing necessary to expand her business. According to Conroy, “ Jim Parrish and the SBDC not only helped me with my business plan and finding SBA lenders but provided me with the support I needed to avoid getting discouraged by the amount of time and work it took to get the money I needed to grow my business. For their assistance, I am grateful.”

Fundraising for a Cause, Inc. was founded by Conroy in 2007. During that year her sister had gotten breast cancer causing Conroy to become active in fundraising for the American Cancer Society. According to Conroy, “if kids can sell wrapping paper for school, why not sell pink ribbons to raise money for the American Cancer Society.” From that thought a business was born. She would make ribbons and other products to wholesale to charities for them to use in their fundraising efforts.

Jim Parrish and the SBDC not only helped me with my business plan and finding SBA lenders but provided me with the support I needed to avoid getting discouraged by the amount of time and work it took to get the money I needed to grow my business. For their assistance, I am grateful.
