Hernando Beach Restaurant and Country Store Finds Resilience

The Silver Dolphin a Florida SBDC at USF Success Story

Silver Dolphin Restaurant and Country Store of Hernando County

Nestled between the ocean and canal, Silver Dolphin Restaurant and Country Store, a Hernando Beach destination for locals and tourists alike. With a unique main dining area known as the Secret Garden—a lush outdoor space with nearly 100 seats—guests can enjoy fresh food while surrounded by wildlife and the natural beauty of the Gulf coast.

The business was born from, owner, Yann Milcendeau’s appreciation for the area’s abundant parks and recreational opportunities. “With the ocean being right next to us and all the things you can do around here… it’s an absolute playground for anybody who wants to go on vacation,” Milcendeau said.

When challenges struck, the Florida SBDC at USF and senior business consultant Bill Burnham were there to help. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the business received critical assistance securing a Florida Emergency Bridge Loan, which allowed them to continue paying employees and complete renovations while closed. “The SBDC was instrumental in us surviving COVID,” Milcendeau shared. “The Florida SBDC actually saved us. Some businesses have never reopened because they had no cash up front, nothing that they could get on short notice. We did it and because of that we’re open today and we still employ our 32 employees at the Silver Dolphin,” he added.

Disaster struck again when a hurricane caused substantial flooding. “When the storm first hit you think that there is no hope – it’s over, you look at your property and you can’t believe what you’re looking at compared to what you had before, but we took the time to rebuild,” Milcendeau said. Once again, Burnham assisted in securing both a bridge loan and an SBA disaster loan, providing the funds needed to reopen.

“I want to thank the Florida SBDC at USF for all they’ve done for us, I really believe that they’re the greatest reason we’re still here because of the bridge loans and the money that we received as a loan to reopen so quickly. Most of all I want to thank Bill, he was instrumental in taking the application and making it easy for us,” Milcendeau said.

Today, the restaurant and store continue to thrive, welcoming families and friends to gather over food and enjoy the scenery of Hernando Beach. “Here at Hernando Beach, we’re all in business still. We’re all open and we’re better than before. We have come back to be more attractive to all the tourists, all the people that want to come and visit us,” Milcendeau said.

Thanks to resilience, community support, and guidance from the Florida SBDC at USF, this small business is stronger than ever.

Sarasota Daiquiri Bar Stirs Up Growth After Disaster

The Daiquiri Deck Inc of Sarasota County

The Daiquiri Deck Inc of Sarasota County

What began as a Key West-inspired idea in the early 1990s has grown into one of Florida’s most recognizable frozen drink destinations. In 1993, after envisioning a place where locals and visitors could enjoy handcrafted daiquiris in a lively beachside setting, Troy Syprett and his partners launched their first Daiquiri Deck location in Siesta Key Village.

Today, the concept has expanded to five Florida locations, combining signature frozen drinks with a polished, casual dining experience featuring a menu designed by a Culinary Institute of America-trained chef.

But like many hospitality businesses, the restaurant faced significant challenges after natural disasters, Hurricane Debby, Milton, and Helene, disrupted operations. That’s when Syprett turned to the Florida SBDC at USF.

“The hurricane that did the most damage in our area experienced between 7 and 9 ft of storm surge. That storm surge inundated one of our restaurants with about 12 inches of water that had been contaminated with grease trap oil and other materials. Our store in St. Armand’s also experienced about 12 inches of flooding too,” Syprett said. “The other major impact that the hurricanes had on our region was the destruction of a large portion of the short-term rental accommodations and housing throughout the barrier islands, which led to a precipitous drop in our sales,” Syprett said.

Senior business consultant Scott Carpenter guided the business through disaster recovery funding, helping secure a Florida Emergency Bridge Loan and a Small Business Administration (SBA) Economic Injury Loan.

“Once we began working with the SBDC, Scott became our point person,” Syprett shared. “He not only helped us access recovery funds but also connected us with other SBDC advisors, including an import-export expert evaluating opportunities in South Korea and a financial advisor helping us strengthen our structure,” he added.

The owner credits the Florida SBDC at USF and his business consultant with being a steady partner through tough times: “Scott was able to help us and support us by connecting us with the correct people to help us get through that application process which we are still in, post storm. At this point [he] has been a critical point or a critical partner in helping us survive the last seven months after the hurricanes, his support and their support helped us secure the funds that we needed to get us through a very difficult time when we were lacking in customers and lacking in sales,” Syprett mentioned.

With recovery well underway, the company is thriving again and planning future expansions into new markets. “For the most part our stores have physically recovered except for one store we have that still needs major repairs. The other four stores are open and operating at full capacity and those stores have seen a return of sales,” Syprett said.

From Corporate to Cutting-Edge Manufacturing: A Veteran and Family-Owned Business Thrives in Manatee County

Spectrum Custom Molds & Manufacturing Inc of Manatee County

Spectrum Custom Molds & Manufacturing Inc of Manatee County

After two decades in corporate America developing new products and technologies, Michael Guidoboni felt a shift coming in the industry. “In 2016, 2017, the corporate industry was taking a little bit of a turn, and I started exploring what other options I had,” Guidoboni said.

Reflecting on an early passion for metal fabrication, Michael and Son, Adam Guidoboni, took a bold leap: purchasing a tool shop and transforming it into a full-service manufacturing company, Spectrum Custom Molds and Manufacturing Inc. “Bada bing, bada boom. Here I am eight years later, and you see where we’ve come,” Michael said.

The family-owned company has since grown into a one-stop shop for customers—offering everything from tool building to production, assembly, and distribution. With support from the Florida SBDC at USF and consultant Brad Mix, the business received guidance on financial planning, which led to successful results. “Our relationship with the Florida SBDC at USF has been ongoing for about five years now. I originally touched base with the SBDC for some assistance in getting financing for building the building that we’re sitting in right now. Needed the resources, didn’t really know where to go or how to proceed with that process. And early on I was connected with Brad from the Florida SBDC at USF and he helped me put my financials together so that we could go approach banks and lenders in an attempt to get funding for the building,” Michael said.

With Mix’s help the family business secured financing through a U.S Small Business Administration (SBA) loan with help from their bank in Wisconsin and Florida First Capital, which oversees the SBA 504 portion.

That funding helped fuel a major milestone: the build of a new facility in 2023. “Our biggest success is our new facility that we moved into in 2023 and all the equipment we’ve acquired since then,” Adam said. “We’ve purchased about three machines per year, which has really given us the opportunity to grow. The 10 acres we’re on gives us unlimited capability to grow past where we’re at,” Adam added.

In recognition of these achievements, the business received the 2025 Florida SBDC Veteran Business Owner of the Year Award during the Florida SBDC at USF’s Annual Business Awards. “Since the award ceremony from the Florida SBDC at USF, we’ve seen a lot of uptick in growth. Especially connections, new opportunities, quoting, it’s really given us an opportunity to grow as a business. And, that recognition, we put it on our website. We’ve seen a lot of interest from that and brought new parties,” Adam said.

Now thriving with sales growth, job retention, and national opportunities, the company continues to set its sights on the future of U.S. manufacturing and plans to keep the Florida SBDC at USF along for the ride. “So, as we continue to see success and the business grows, I can envision our relationship with the Florida SBDC at USF providing future opportunities for us. If we have to go build another building, we’re gonna need to get financing. I’m gonna reach out to Brad and say, ‘Here’s the situation we’re in, you know, how do you recommend we move forward? I value your input.’ I think all the information we’ve been given from the Florida SBDC at USF has been spot on and obviously has worked out,” Michael said.

As for advice to other local small business owners, the father and son duo mentioned taking advantage of the opportunities that are readily available. “For new small businesses that are coming into the area and growing, I think the Florida SBDC at USF really gives a good connection and opportunity, especially when you’re a new business and you’ve never been in business before,” Adam said. “I mean, we’re a fairly young business going into our eighth year and for anybody that’s in year one, year two, all the connections and advice in the beginning is more than helpful,” he added.

Brewing Tradition & Resilience: A Tampa Coffee Shop’s Story

Blog, Featured Success Stories, Success Stories
Florida SBDC at USF consultant David Vargas works with Yohanna Santos owner of Corona’s Coffee Shop in Tampa.

Corona’s Coffee Shop of Hillsborough County

Nestled in the heart of Tampa, a cozy Latin coffee shop and restaurant, Corona’s Coffee Shop, has been serving flavorful coffee and authentic cuisine for over 40 years. Originally opened by a Cuban descendant with a passion for community and culture, the business was later purchased by its current owner, a proud Dominican entrepreneur, Johanna Santos, who has continued the legacy while adding her own cultural flavor.

“Back in 1999, this was my mother’s first job in the United States. As a teenager I used to come here and help my mom prep and help my mom cook so I was always involved in the business, not necessarily working but on my free time. Miguel, the prior owner, he was very much in love with the way I like cooking so back in 2019, when he decided to retire, he just called me up and said, ‘Do you want Corona since you’re here all the time?’ And I said, Absolutely I will keep it,” Santos explained.

The shop offers more than just a cup of coffee—it’s a place where locals gather to enjoy warm, homemade Latin meals and connect over shared traditions. The current owner was drawn to this business because of its rich heritage and the opportunity to preserve a beloved neighborhood staple. “I love cooking, I started cooking when I was 9 years old and I was always very passionate about not the cooking element but the seeing people gather together and just have a great meal and talk about anything and it was a dream of mine to always have a restaurant and when the opportunity was given to be honest with you I was like “Oh my God, this is happening.” So, I wasn’t nervous, but I was more like okay we got to take this challenge and let’s go ahead and do it. My mother was here for the first two year helping me because she knew this business for so long and the entire community just welcomed me very well,” Santos said.

When hurricanes threatened the Tampa Bay region, the business faced difficult decisions. “When the storm happened, we were with no electricity, we were closed for a total of about 10 days, no electricity for 6 days. That entitled that we got ready for before the storm. Never in our thoughts we thought that we were going to be without electricity for that long, so we had stocked the restaurant in hope to open quickly after the storm and that was not the case. We end up losing pretty much every product that we have, all the inventory was lost. With that also we kept payroll the same because we knew that our staff if we suffer our staff also were suffering. After we got electricity, it took us to use our own credit cards to supply the business again, seeing that and seeing that we were already going through so much the structure has suffered some damages,” Santos explained.

Unsure of the path forward, the owner turned to the Florida SBDC at USF. Business consultant David Vargas provided her with valuable resources and one-on-one guidance to stabilize and refocus the business. “I was very surprised to see that within two weeks of me going to the SBDC I was quickly approved for $50,000 and after I was approved for the 50,000, which I couldn’t even believe it, three days later it was in my bank account and it was like I felt like they have saved our life at that moment and they have saved Corona and I thank God in every second of that and we were able to quickly fix the place and continue with our business,” Santos said.

With support from the Florida SBDC at USF, the shop not only remained open—it began to grow again. “Receiving those funds that fast I would say immediately cleared the fog that was on top of the business because I was able then to continue payroll, I was able to supply the restaurant, I was able to fix a lot of things that were major for the restaurant,” Santos said.

“At first I was like embarrassed every time someone came and gave me a compliment about the business and now I have learned to embrace um and sometime it took me a long time to actually realize that people around this community were proud of me you know that they that they were proud of me and they were proud of the business that they come in here and they said “Oh my god this place has changed so much and it have changed for the better or um they cannot see a day without coming in here,” Santos mentioned.

Looking ahead, the owner plans to continue leaning on the Florida SBDC at USF as she explores new opportunities and strengthens her operations as she gives thanks to her business consultant for all of the help. “Florida SBDC, especially the one here in USF, I am for life grateful and I know that that is their job to help us but I always felt and again I don’t know if they do that with everybody but I felt like the attention to myself, the attention to my business was always very personal and they made me feel very welcome and again they made me feel just very hopeful. David Vargas from the SBDC thank you so much I want to thank you so much for all the help and all the encouragement that you give me because we had conversations about business and I have received nothing but positivity encouragement and also a lot more information that I didn’t know,” she said.

Through dedication, heritage, and support, this Tampa coffee shop continues to thrive—one cafecito at a time.

Burning Bright: How a Sarasota Candle Business Sparked Success

Blog, Featured Success Stories, Success Stories

Bia Candle Company of Sarasota County

Founded in 2019, Bia Candle Company, a Sarasota-based candle company has quickly risen from a startup idea to a thriving manufacturer and retailer with partnerships across Florida. The business, which specializes in high-quality, clean-burning scented candles, was born out of the founder, Bia Antunes’ passion as a candle aficionado and frustration with the inconsistent quality on the market.

“I realized that even though the market was saturated with candles, there were very few that offered safe, clean ingredients at an accessible price,” Antunes said. “I set out to create candles made with high-quality wax, safe scents, and wicks that burn cleanly without smoke or soot,” the owner explained.

Since its launch, the company has developed strong retail and wholesale relationships, including with Whole Foods Market and Chase Bank, while also selling directly to consumers online. As with many manufacturers, managing cash flow was an early challenge. That’s when the business turned to the Florida SBDC at USF.

“My consultant Scott from the Florida SBDC at USF has helped me tremendously. He has extensive experience in business, from marketing to finance. He’s always willing to sit down with me and go over all these crucial business tools that, you know, as a new business owner, I’m constantly learning. I don’t have an MBA, I didn’t graduate from my college ready to start a business,” Antunes said.

Business consultant Scott Carpenter provided guidance on marketing, financing, and securing capital. “Funding is a really hard part of business and I’m self-funded,” Antunes said. “Scott helped me get a loan with the SBA, which helps a lot because especially with manufacturing, you’re buying materials and you’re making product, and then you have to go to market to sell that product. So, you have that time lapse where your money is tied up in product and it takes a while to get that money back,” she added.

The business owner goes on to say that one of her biggest successes was actually lighting the flame and bringing her idea to life. “I would say my biggest success so far was initially starting my business. Having the courage to do it. I create a product which I had to learn how to make. I thought it was going to be a lot easier to make a quality candle than it actually is,” she said.

Now, with sales growing and partnerships expanding throughout Florida, the company continues to thrive, crediting much of its success to its loyal customer base. “One thing that really makes me proud and keeps me going every day is getting great reviews from people online that buy our candles and buy them again and again and write wonderful reviews, sometimes even personal emails saying these are the best candles they’ve ever had. They love all our scents. They love how they burn. All that positive reinforcement is a success. It warms my heart and keeps me going because every day there’s a challenge with business,” Antunes said with a smile.

Antunes didn’t fail to mention how the Florida SBDC at USF has helped in providing not only resources but also the confidence to scale sustainably. “So, in the future I hope to use the Florida SBDC at USF to advance my business even more,” she said. “I hope to work with Scott more extensively, where he can help me up the game a little bit more and increase my revenues and help me keep costs lower and also with ideas, right? Because he’s in the market. He’s helping a lot of other businesses, he knows what’s going on, so he can always give me advice as to which direction I should take and making decisions for my business,” she added.

As for her fellow small business owner, Antunes offer this piece of advice: “I would suggest that everyone that starts a new business, you know, try to have access to all these tools that are offered by the SBA, by the SBDC, by the U.S. government. There are a lot of tools out there and sometimes they feel like they’re out of reach just because you don’t know where they are or how to get to them,” she said. “Working locally with your chamber or with universities or trying to find the local [SBDC] office, through the SBA or directly, you can find very helpful people and tools and executives that wanna help you,” she concluded.

Turning a Passion for Children’s Literature into a Thriving Business

The Story Garden of Pinellas County

The Story Garden of Pinellas County

For one lifelong educator, a love of children’s books blossomed into a business that is now inspiring young readers across St. Petersburg. Megan Kotsko, owner of The Story Garden, opened her bookstore with a simple yet powerful mission: to provide children from birth through age 12 with a space to discover stories, creativity, and the joy of reading. The store carries a wide variety of fiction, nonfiction, art supplies, and activity books—everything connected to sparking imagination in children.

With more than 20 years of teaching kindergarten and first grade, Kotsko knew firsthand the magic of reading to children. After raising her own kids at home, she decided it was time to take a leap of faith and pursue her dream of owning a bookstore.

To bring her vision to life, Kotsko partnered with the Florida SBDC at Pinellas County Economic Development (PCED) and business consultant Debra Schweikowsky. Together, they worked on marketing strategies, financial planning, and securing the right permits.

“She [Debra Schweikosky] has been instrumental in just guiding us and holding our hand through anything related to opening this children’s bookstore. She has helped us looking at our financials. She has helped us as far as setting opening dates, just looking at all the fine details of what it takes to open a business. She helped us dig into the permits that we needed. She helped us find the license we needed to carry snacks and drinks,” Kotsko said.

Most importantly, Schweikowsky assisted in obtaining the loan that made the business possible. “Working with Deb, with the Florida SBDC, we were given her guidance and that helped us navigate the loan application process and helped us obtain our loan. And also she helped us with some resources to obtain a line of credit, which was very helpful when opening a new business,” Kotsko explained.

Today, The Story Garden is flourishing. Families stop by regularly for story time, and children leave with books and activities that nurture a lifelong love of learning. “I find a lot of success in being a part of children’s lives in the community and building literacy within our community. It’s just a joy to see them walk through the door and say, hi Miss Megan, or the parents tell me that they wanted to come to The Story Garden to find new books. So being a part of the community and, um, and helping children find their love for reading has been my biggest success so far,” Kotsko said with a smile.

Moving forward, the business owner plans to use the Florida SBDC at PCED for more guidance. “As we continue to grow with The Story Garden, we will certainly continue meeting with Deb. Working with the Florida SBDC was instrumental in launching us, and I think it is going to be a very valuable resource for me as I continue learning and growing as a small business,” Kotsko said.

As for advice to other small business owners, Kotsko offers this: “I would tell other small business owners to find their local person with the Florida SBDC immediately. The minute that I started meeting with Debra monthly, just kept me on track. It gave me focus points. In working with her, it told me the next steps that I needed to do to keep myself going.”

“It was just having this incredible resource, obviously low cost, as it was a free resource, which is incredible for us. But it was really just a nice reassurance every month and it kind of also gave me that accountability. I function much better when I have that accountability. So, meeting with Deb kept us on track and it helped us meet our goals and our deadlines in order to open our doors,” she added.

The Story Garden is a reminder that with dedication and a great support system, a beautiful story can be written.

Family-Owned Business Brings Wellness to the American Workplace

BN Star of Pasco County

For more than 20 years, Magnolia Munoz, Omar Orjuela, and Tomás Orjuela, a family in Colombia, dedicated itself to improving health and wellness through workplace activities. When the family decided to expand to the United States, they brought their business, BN Star, and their vision with them— helping businesses build healthier, more productive teams.

“We started our business to continue a twenty yearlong business in Colombia and the benefits of our activities to more people to improve health and wellness in the workplace,” Magnolia explained.

The company focuses on wellness and healthy habits for the workforce, offering services designed to boost morale, reduce stress, and promote a culture of wellbeing. Their mission is simple: healthier employees lead to stronger businesses.

To ensure a successful launch in a new country, the owners turned to the Florida SBDC at USF and business consultant Pablo Arroyo. “We have used Florida SBDC at USF and Pablo’s guidance to build a stronger foundation to grow our brand in the American market, also advice and more peer review on how our idea would look in this new country,” Tomás shared.

With support from the Florida SBDC at USF, the business gained insight into legal requirements, financial planning, and branding strategies. The team also participated in no-cost training and received valuable peer review to better understand how their idea would fit into the American market.

“We have felt empowered to know that our idea was viable in this market. So from starting [with] our first clients and building the bridge from clients from Colombia and getting the confidence through market research and different variabilities, it has been really key for our stronger presence in the county and the state,” Tomás said.

That foundation has paid off. The company has established its presence in the United States and continues to grow its reputation as a trusted resource for workplace wellness.

“Our biggest success is with no doubt being able to start our business and in a short time have it strongly running and out there. That has been incredible. When you move from abroad, everything is unknown. Everything is scary, but having a strong foundation and a smooth start has been a great success in a short period of time for sure,” Tomás added.

Looking ahead, the owners plan to continue working with the Florida SBDC at USF to support their expansion and reach more businesses. “As we continue to grow our business, we’re looking forward to using more of the networking resources and also continuing to use all the consulting possibilities that we can get… so from refining our strategies to going into more specific areas of our business, like marketing or financing. I think it would be great to explore,” Tomás said.

When asked what advice they would give to their fellow small business owners, Tomás said: “I would tell other small business owners that are wanting to start, that Florida SBDC is gonna help you a lot so don’t be scared. There are many resources that you can explore, a lot of ways to learn new things and that they’re definitely gonna make it easier.”

The family emphasized how they will surely use the Florida SBDC at USF as their go-to business resource as they continue to advocate for wellness in the workforce and provide their services. “Florida SBDC at USF are wonderful,” Magnolia concluded.

Lakeland’s Newest Culinary Destination Brings Wine & Gourmet Fare to the Community

Blog, Featured Success Stories, Success Stories

The Wine Garden of Polk County

When Lisa Brophy opened The Wine Garden on April 1, 2025, in Lakeland, it was the culmination of a lifelong dream. The wine and gourmet food retail market, complete with a wine bar, blends her passion for fine food and wine with her vision for creating a welcoming space for the community.

“I mean, it was the goal pretty much like all of my adult career life. I went to a Culinary Institute of America, and even while I was there, I was kind of formulating the idea of what I wanted to do in the future. And so that’s how this business, 30 years later, came to pass,” she shared.

To turn her dream into reality, Brophy connected with the Florida SBDC at USF and business consultant Greg Manning. “Greg was instrumental in actually helping me organize myself, figure out what my needs were, my documentation, my God, the, documentation that Greg gave me, the spreadsheets. I mean, oh my God, I could not have done it without him,” Brophy expressed with laughter.

Together, the business owner and her business consultant worked on detailed financial planning that helped her secure a commercial loan. “Once we were able to put all of that information together, I was able to present that to several financial institutions and was in fact offered a loan,” Brophy said. “I was actually offered an SBA loan. I ended up not having to go that route. I ended up going a different route through a private loan which again, I was able to acquire because of the various documents and spreadsheets and information that Greg helped me put together,” she added.

The funding acquired also helped the business owner cover contractor costs for remodeling her location and allowed her to hire a talented team. “If you ask me, my greatest success has been my team,” Brophy said. “That’s the thing that I’m most proud of, is the team members. This runs like a well-oiled machine at this point, and it’s not because of me, it’s because of the team,” she added.

Since opening, The Wine Garden has welcomed a steady stream of customers eager to explore its curated wine selection, gourmet offerings, and inviting atmosphere.

As she looks ahead, Brophy plans to continue working with the Florida SBDC at USF for guidance as her business grows and to use its various other services.“I’ll be using the Florida SBDC at USF student teams, that participate in assisting with marketing and advertising and consulting. And then I would love to utilize Greg’s talents at the end of this year for maybe doing an assessment of how we did this year and what we can do to possibly improve moving forward, how to, you know, streamline things as necessary, make sure that we’re profitable,” she mentioned.

As for advice to her fellow small business owners, Brophy had this to say: “Use them. I really didn’t know what to expect when I reached out to them and it was so reassuring. I was a deer caught in headlights. I really didn’t know how to open this business and Greg helped steer this ship. He listened to me and then, you know, didn’t come at me in a way that made me feel like I didn’t know what I was doing. He was extremely helpful and helped guide me according to what my needs were, and so I would absolutely recommend using them.”

Laser Safety Business Thrives While Protecting Vision and Expanding Globally

Innovative US of Sarasota County

Since 1993, Innovative US has focused on manufacturing cell-protective eyewear and safety gear used for lasers—an industry that has grown exponentially across sectors like healthcare, defense, manufacturing, and research.

Driven by a passion for safety and innovation, Andrew Barrows took over his father’s business to meet the rising demand for high-quality laser protection. “My dad started this company in our basement in Minnesota in 1993. So, we’ve been doing this longer than any other company in, well, possibly in the world, that I’m aware of. We started with a focus on the medical industry and the dental industry. About three years ago, I decided to expand into the industrial laser area,” Barrows said.

Looking to expand their reach, Barrows turned to the Florida SBDC at USF and business consultant and international trade specialist, Selma Canas. With Selma’s guidance, the company developed an export marketing plan that identified viable markets and targeted demographics.

This plan provided valuable insight into which countries had both the need and purchasing power for their specialized products. “We are located here in Sarasota County and we’ve been interested in exporting to other parts of the world, and our customer base is mixed of physicians and dental practitioners among other industrial users, but we didn’t know where we wanted to spend most of our time focusing because we didn’t know which countries had these types of professions. We didn’t know which countries had the income to be able to buy the products we’re looking for, so instead of going at it blind, we contacted Selma at the SBDC for a marketing review specifically for our customer base,” Barrows said.

The business now exports to multiple countries, with its biggest success being the ability to manufacture and sell directly in Brazil—a major milestone in the company’s international growth.

“After this report, we found that Brazil actually had the second largest amount of dermatologists after the United States per capita. We weren’t expecting that. We decided to target Brazil. We found a manufacturer in Brazil and we started to build a relationship with them. They’re now our customer base. We are now selling into Brazil. We’ve overcome some of the regulatory shipping into Brazil, and we have found a very nice market for exponential growth for years to come,” Barrows said.

Since partnering with the Florida SBDC at USF, Innovative US has seen steady growth and continues to refine its global strategy. “As we continue to grow our business, we’re looking to the SBDC to help us things with grants. So, for example, we want to do more trade shows and we’re gonna use some of the grant money that’s available to be able to attend trade shows that we think are gonna open up new export potentials in different parts of the world,” Barrows explained.

For other small businesses considering SBDC services, Barrows shares this advice: “You can rely on entities like the SBDC to help us with grant money, with market data. As a small business, we have to be very concerned with every dollar spent and working with the SBDC allows us to make that dollar go further and allows us to make more revenue based on some of the market, but also, do it in a smart way, making the right decisions.”

With a global vision and a strong support system, Innovative US is protecting more than just eyes—it’s securing a future built on innovation and smart strategy.

DM Bakery Supplies of Hillsborough County

When Renzo Sciutto and his business partners launched DM Bakery Supplies, the vision was simple: make high-quality baking supplies accessible to bakers of all sizes—from home bakers to large-scale baking operations. What started as an idea sparked by a family need has since grown into a thriving business shipping products across 20 states.

“It was an idea for my brother and sister-in-law. They were living in Tampa at that moment and she’s a very talented baker. So, she noticed that it was kind of difficult to find quality products for her baking. So, with them and with my wife, we planned this business, and we started about a year ago,” Sciutto shared. “With them and with my wife, we planned this business, and we started about a year ago. Now, here we are.”

To help guide their new venture, Sciutto turned to the Florida SBDC at USF, where business consultant Jennifer Biles provided marketing strategy support and detailed market research.

“Jennifer has been a very helpful for us because she gave us a lot of advice and insights about the market. Data kind of stuff really help us to know more about the business and how we can face it, because we were new in town. So, this year with her help and the Florida SBDC at the USF team become a very good asset for us,” Sciutto said.

With this guidance, the business was able to fine-tune its strategy, reach more customers, and expand operations. Today, the company is not only serving the local community but has also expanded its reach across the country.

“Our biggest success so far is that in just one year, we not only sell in the store, but in our online store in almost 20 states, including Florida. So, we are growing, we are spreading our service for all America,” he added.

Looking ahead, the co-owner plans to continue using the Florida SBDC at USF as the business scales. “Maybe a new location. Maybe how to spread our market. Whatever comes to us as idea, I’m gonna share with you [Jennifer] and hear you up,” he said.

When asked if he would recommend the Florda SBDC at USF to his fellow small business owners, Sciutto happily expressed, “I absolutely and I already do recommend this service and this consultant service to not only every new business but business[es] ongoing who wants to develop a new market or discuss about new strategies or receive advices about the Florida market and the U.S. market. I totally recommend it, and I am very grateful with Jennifer and the SBDC team.”
