Martial Arts Business Builds Strength in St. Petersburg Community

Blog, Featured Success Stories, Success Stories

Suncoast Martial Arts Group, Inc. of Pinellas CountySuncoast Martial Arts Group, Inc. of Pinellas County

For Eric and Julee Taylor, Suncoast Martial Arts Group Inc. is more than a studio—it’s a place where discipline, confidence and community come together.

Located in St. Petersburg, the business offers instruction in kung fu, tactical jujitsu, Filipino martial arts and tai chi. But at its core, Suncoast Martial Arts Group focuses on something deeper.

“Our main focus is helping our students grow within and without,” Eric Taylor, owner and head instructor, said. “The greatest purpose we have for our students is to teach them not only external techniques, but internal techniques—the mind, body and spirit.”

That mission is rooted in Taylor’s lifelong passion for martial arts. He began training more than 40 years ago and credits the discipline for shaping his life.

“It helped me learn discipline and control and confidence and to stay in shape,” he said. “I want to give that same gift to other students and other people in my community.”

While Taylor had mastery in martial arts, navigating business ownership was a new challenge. That’s when he connected with business consultant Debra Schweikowsky at the Florida Small Business Development Center at Pinellas County Economic Development.

Through one-on-one consulting, Taylor gained the tools needed to grow and sustain the business.

“She helped me with my business plan,” Taylor said. “She helped me check out the demographics of the business to make sure I have the right clientele. She helped me also with marketing so I can know what my age group [is] and the people that I can touch more effectively.”

That guidance proved critical when Taylor pursued full ownership of the studio.

“With the help of Debra, she helped me to acquire the business,” he said. “I didn’t think I was able to, but she held my hand step by step, and so I was able to purchase or buy out the partners of Suncoast Martial Arts Group.”

Shortly after taking ownership, the business faced a major setback when hurricanes caused significant damage.

“It destroyed our vehicles, it damaged our mats, and because of the time period, it affected us financially,” Taylor explained. “I didn’t know where to go.”

Once again, the Florida SBDC at Pinellas County stepped in to help.

“I had to reach out to the SBDC and talk to Debra,” he said. “I was all worried, and Debra said, ‘No worries. I got you.’”

With Schweikowsky’s assistance, the business secured a bridge loan that helped them recover and rebuild.

“We were able to get new mats and get a new vehicle and work with our community,” Taylor said.

For the Taylors, success isn’t defined solely by financial growth—it’s measured by the transformation they see in their students.

“Watching the children develop as they grow and seeing how they transition from the beginning to where they’re at now—that’s important,” Julee Taylor said. “The fundamentals that we’re teaching the children is how we help our community.”

Eric echoed that sentiment, noting the changes he sees in students who come through their doors.

“To see that disruptive kid … and after a while being here, helping them say ‘Yes sir’ and ‘No sir,’ and their grades increase—that’s really touching,” he said. “Seeing the kids have purpose and discipline for the first time is really our biggest success.”

With a strong foundation and continued support from the Florida SBDC at PCED, Suncoast Martial Arts Group is planning for growth.

The business hopes to expand its facility and reach more families while also deepening its community engagement through events like Family Night, which brings parents and children together for training and fellowship.

“We gather all the families together, and we have a bonding moment where we work out and connect with one another,” Julee said.

Eric is already working with Schweikowsky on strategies to make expansion a reality.

“I really want to get a bigger spot and a bigger business so we can touch more of the community,” he said. “Debra has already started working with me on the strategy so that can make that goal happen.”

Both Julee and Eric encourage other entrepreneurs to take advantage of resources like the Florida SBDC Network.

“It’s a great resource,” Julee said. “Having a great mentor like Debra is vital for us.”

“I kind of look at Debra as my sensei in the business world,” Eric added. “You need a sensei. No matter how much you know, you need guidance.”

With continued mentorship and a commitment to community, Suncoast Martial Arts Group is poised to keep building strength, both inside and outside the studio.

Brewing Success: From a Single Table to a Coffee Experience on Wheels

Mentoring & Services, Inc. dba Mastery Coffee of Hillsborough CountyMentoring & Services, Inc. dba Mastery Coffee of Hillsborough County

In the heart of Downtown Tampa, Mastery Coffee is redefining what it means to enjoy a cup of coffee. What began as a simple mobile setup by business owner, Nestor Ramirez, and his family has grown into a thriving specialty coffee business that delivers not just beverages — but an immersive cultural experience rooted in Colombian coffee traditions.

Driven by a passion for quality and education, the Ramirez launched the business to bridge the gap between commercial coffee and true specialty coffee. “When I make the specialty coffee and explain I explain to you about the make, the farm to the cup, and explain what you [are] feeling in your senses, in your mouth, it’s a total difference,” he shares.

His mission is clear: teach customers how to appreciate high-quality coffee while offering insights to aspiring entrepreneurs.

With guidance from Florida SBDC at USF Business Consultant Pablo Arroyo, the owner received critical support in navigating startup logistics, laws, and regulations.

“The information from Pablo and from SBDC is very important for me,” Ramirez said. “When I meet with Pablo, the best information for me is the business plan, how [to] expand my business according [to] the business[es] around, studies about the coffee in the country, the numbers is very important, and how much people [are] coming [for] the best coffee,” he says.

Starting with just a table, the entrepreneur leveraged SBDC networking opportunities to build momentum. “My business grows with the help of [Florida] SBDC [at] USF because when I start, I start in only [with] a table and remember [my] first event was in Florida SBDC of Tampa. I attended more than 15 [people] in networking,” Ramirez said.

Today, the business operates two fully equipped coffee trucks, participates in events across Hillsborough, Pasco, and Pinellas counties, and has expanded its reach to obtain three partnerships with local businesses.

“In this moment I have three partnerships working with me, I make different events, last October, I bought another truck,” Ramirez said. From sporting events to corporate gatherings, demand continues to grow through strong community engagement and online visibility.

For this business owner, success is measured in customer satisfaction: “My biggest success is when the people appreciate about the drinks, about the service, about the coffee. When I receive your feedback and you discover that it’s good coffee, it’s for me the best reward.”

As he looks ahead, he remains committed to working with the Florida SBDC at USF and encourages other entrepreneurs to take advantage of its resources to turn passion into sustainable success.

“For the different entrepreneurs that want to start a business, I think that the [Florida] SBDC at the USF is a good way. Most important[ly] it’s free, [you] don’t pay nothing for their help, it’s true, not a scam… the [Florida] SBDC at USF is true, [it’s] help, and the people is always ready for help you,” Ramirez concluded.

What Is a Merchant Cash Advance (MCA)?

What Is a Merchant Cash Advance (MCA)?

by Debra Schweikowsky | June 18, 2026

A Merchant Cash Advance (MCA) is a form of alternative business financing where a company sells a portion of its upcoming credit card receipts or daily revenue to a funder in exchange for an immediate lump‑sum payment. Instead of traditional fixed installments, repayment happens automatically as a percentage of daily or weekly sales deposits. Because payments adjust with revenue levels, this option often appeals to businesses whose income varies throughout the month. Each provider, however, sets its own specific rules, costs, and qualification criteria.

Speed and Ease of Access

Many small business owners consider MCAs because the approval and funding process is significantly faster than what banks require. Traditional lenders typically need collateral, financial documents, business plans, and lengthy underwriting periods. In contrast, MCA providers rely mainly on a company’s sales activity, which allows approval in just hours and funding within a day or two. This makes MCAs a convenient source of quick cash for covering urgent needs such as payroll, emergency repairs, or time‑sensitive inventory purchases. Businesses with low credit scores or minimal operating history may still qualify, further adding to the appeal.

High Costs and Complex Terms

Although they offer quick access to cash, MCAs are among the costliest financing options available. Instead of standard interest rates, providers use a factor rate — commonly between 1.1 and 1.5 — to determine how much must be repaid. For instance, borrowing $10,000 could require repaying $11,000 to $15,000. This total cost is established up front, and early repayment does not reduce the amount owed. Because of these unusual fee structures, MCA agreements can be difficult to compare or fully understand without careful review.

Weighing the Pros and Cons

Understanding the trade‑offs of an MCA is essential before signing any agreement.

Pros:

  • High approval likelihood
  • Very fast funding
  • Simple application process
  • No need for personal collateral
  • Payment amounts adjust with daily revenue

Cons:

  • Substantial overall costs
  • Daily or weekly withdrawals that may strain cash flow
  • Short repayment timelines
  • Potential for entering a cycle where one advance is needed to pay off another
  • Limited regulatory oversight compared to traditional lending institutions

The Refinancing Trap

A major concern for small businesses considering MCAs is the lack of options for refinancing the debt. Some owners assume they can later use an SBA‑backed loan to relieve the financial pressure, but Small Business Administration (SBA) rules explicitly forbid using their loan programs to refinance Merchant Cash Advance obligations. Because MCAs are legally framed as selling future revenue rather than borrowing money, the SBA does not treat them as eligible debt. Once committed to a Merchant Cash Advance, the business must repay it independently, making it crucial to treat this financing method as a final option for short‑term, urgent needs rather than a long‑term solution.

Since every business is different and may need different funding solutions, it is always recommended to reach out to a trusted and credible source for more information when searching for funding options.
