America Industrial Guide of Hillsborough County

Starting a business often requires determination, vision, and the right support. For Maria Smith Pico, owner of American Industrial Guide, the goal was clear: to provide innovative and eco-friendly cleaning products that are safe for people, pets, and the planet. With a commitment to sustainability and excellence, Pico sought to make a difference in how homes and businesses approach cleanliness.

“I lost my father over 20 years ago in Colombia due to toxic cleaning products. This motivate me create safe and sustainable solutions,” Pico said as she explained why she decided to launch this type of business.

While the vision was strong, navigating the complexities of starting and growing a business required professional guidance. That’s where the Florida SBDC at Hillsborough County stepped in. Business consultant Janette Blanco worked closely with Pico to develop a comprehensive business plan that laid the foundation for success. From market analysis to distribution strategy, every step was designed to support sustainable growth.

“I want to take a moment to thank the tremendous support I have received from Janette Blanco, the Florida SBDC at Hillsborough County, and ECC [Entrepreneur Collaborative Center]. Janette introduced me to the SBDC and the valuable resources. Guided me from the very beginning of my business journey. Her expertise and dedication also connected me to critical community resources that have been instrumental since I first opened my door,” Pico said. “The Florida SBDC at Hillsborough County has helped me in four areas: 1. In strategy planning, 2. Minority certify, I have 21 certifications 3. Networking, local and the city, 4. improve operations,” she added.

Since its launch, American Industrial Guide has expanded its presence across the Tampa Bay region, gaining recognition for its high-quality, resource-conscious products. By offering solutions that conserve water and reduce environmental impact, the company has not only built a loyal customer base but also made a positive impact on the community.

“Our sales has increased to $12,000 a month, we have 7 employees and 5 distributors. American Industrial Guide has made 1.8 million dollars in investment in East Tampa and we project invest 2.5 million in the future,” Pico stated.

Looking ahead, Pico plans to continue leveraging the resources of the Florida SBDC at Hillsborough County to further grow and innovate. “Moving forward, I reach out to Janette for questions [on] export and import, government contracting, and planning.

With a focus on continued excellence and sustainability, the future looks bright for American Industrial Guide. When asked what piece of advice she would give to other small businesses, the business owners said, “I would tell small businesses to call the Florida SBDC at Hillsborough County for information because they help you grow at no-cost.”

Financial Advising Company Banks on Growth with help from the Florida SBDC at PCED

Blog, Featured Success Stories, Success Stories

Safe Harbor Financial Advisors of Pinellas County

Running a small business comes with unique financial challenges, and Jody Zellner, owner of Safe Harbor Financial Advisors, understands that firsthand. As a full-service financial advisory firm, Safe Harbor Financial Advisors specializes in helping small and independent business owners achieve both their personal financial goals and establish strong financial plans for their employees.

Zellner launched Safe Harbor Financial Advisors with a passion for supporting entrepreneurs, recognizing that financial stability is key to long-term business success. However, like many growing businesses, marketing and strategic planning were crucial for expansion. That’s where the Florida SBDC at Pinellas County Economic Development (PCED) came in.

With the guidance of business consultant Kurt Forster, Zellner received professional advice on marketing strategies, business growth planning, and even information on potential grant opportunities.

“As you get through the basics, the SBDC and Kurt Forster will help you grow. You go from stage one where you’re learning what you don’t know to stage two where, okay, now you know what you don’t know and it’s a little overwhelming, so they help bring you into managing your business. Things like having a marketing calendar. Knowing who your experts are. Knowing where to turn,” Zellner said.

Since partnering with the Florida SBDC at PCED, Safe Harbor Financial Advisors has experienced significant growth, expanding its client base and enhancing the services offered to small businesses. “Since working with the Florida SBDC at Pinellas County my business has grown tremendously. To measure, I would probably to say it’s grown at least 10 times over the initial start. When I started getting help from them, I was an independent financial advisor, but I was working for other firms,” Zellner said.

“I think my biggest success so far has been being able to go out and start a brand and a company that I believe in that represents who I am. Not everybody is designed to market to every group of people. I specifically like working with my small business owners,” Zellner added.

Looking ahead, Zellner plans to continue leveraging the Florida SBDC at PCED’s resources to navigate future growth opportunities.

“As I continue to grow my business, I plan on continuing to use the Florida SBDC at Pinellas

County to refine my business marketing. I no longer have to tell people who I am. Now it’s more of refining the message to telling people what I do – getting that target market down. Like we said before, as you grow you have more problems and now, I need them to help me manage those problems, whether it be taking on a virtual assistant, a full-time employee or just even helping me manage my social media marketing which is a whole other issue,” Zellner said.

To fellow business owners, Zellner offers this advice: “If I were to talk to other small business owners about Kurt Forster and the work he does at the Florida SBDC at Pinellas County, I would say there’s no bad time to use this asset. As I’ve mentioned before, they’ve helped me from formation through growth. Even through succession if that’s what you’re looking for. As somebody who invests assets for a reason, you have to look at return on investment and you’re investing nothing but time and gaining the knowledge that they provide to you. I don’t see how you can afford not to use the Florida SBDC,” Zellner expressed.

Corporate Housing Provider Secures FEMA Contract with Help from Florida APEX Accelerator at USF

Blog, Featured Success Stories, Success Stories

GM Corporate Suites of Manatee County

For 15 years, GM Corporate Suites has been a trusted corporate housing provider in Florida, offering temporary housing solutions to clients in need of comfort and convenience. Founded by Gabrielle Channell, the business was launched out of a passion for helping corporate individuals and families find quality housing during business trips or transitional periods.

“We provide furnished housing, everything included as far as living room set, dining room set, bedroom furniture… all housewares and all utilities as well,” Channell said. “We work with a lot of the larger corporate housing providers who’ve been in the business for

much longer than we have but we’ve kind of taken a step up, so now we’re not just a

wholesaler anymore, which is nice,” she added.

When asked why she started the business, Channell replied, “It actually started with my own property, renting it out, because I needed to generate some more income. I was in real estate then and the market was crashing so I rented out my own place furnished and then it dawned on me that this is an actual business and then it just [developed] from there.”

Seeking to expand her business through government contracting, Channell turned to the Florida APEX Accelerator at USF for guidance. She began working with Florida APEX Accelerator at USF business consultant Karen Krymski, whose expertise helped her navigate the complexities of government contracts, starting with a System for Award Management (SAM) registration.

“We have used the information from our APEX Accelerator consultant by utilizing the SAM platform. I did sign up for it initially, but I had never used it because I didn’t know how; it wasn’t user-friendly. Finally, two or three years ago I reached out to somebody, they put me in touch with Karen and it just snowballed from there. She helped me use the platform. We corrected a lot of stuff in it that wasn’t accurate. We got connected from FEMA with the direct lease program for Florida. Karen was super helpful in getting us squared away in the System for Award Management,” Channell expressed.

Through strategic mentorship and targeted support, Channell secured a coveted $15 Million IDIQ lease contract with FEMA. This success not only solidified her business’s reputation but also opened doors to more government contracting opportunities.

“Our business has grown from the APEX Accelerator at USF by obtaining government contracts. We initially started back in November. FEMA contractors and FEMA personnel started reaching out to us because they are deployed here helping rebuild the communities. They were working on the GSA per diem as far as housing is concerned. So once the contractors and FEMA personnel started reaching out to us for housing and we were able to provide what they wanted, and a little bit more than they expected. It just snowballed from there. It was just referral after referral after referral, and then December 2nd is when we obtained the direct lease five-year contract with the FEMA direct lease program,” Channell said with a smile.

Since collaborating with the Florida APEX Accelerator at USF, GM Corporate Suites has seen remarkable growth. Now, they plan on continuing their relationship in order to gain more business success. “We’ll continue to use the APEX Accelerator at Florida moving forward to help us understand additional contracts, opportunity contracts in the System for Award Management and also any other webinars or meetings that they have for networking; we’ll utilize that as well,” Channell said.

Encouraging other small businesses to take advantage of the resources offered, Channell said, “We would tell our friends, or anybody interested in government contracting to use the Florida APEX Accelerator so that way they have the correct guidance for where to get the right contracts, how to utilize the SAM platform because the SAM platform is complex, I will admit. Maybe not to everybody else but for me it was. So, Karen tremendously helped us out getting through that, doing the woman-owned small business [certification], getting us on board with that. We got that approved so we would suggest definitely using an APEX Florida Accelerator.”

National Women’s History Month 2025: Celebrating Women-Owned Businesses “Moving Forward Together!”

Blog, Human Resources

National Women’s History Month in 2025 embraces the theme, “Moving Forward Together! Women Educating & Inspiring Generations”—a tribute to women who have profoundly influenced society through education, mentorship, and leadership. As we celebrate the achievements of women throughout history, it is essential to highlight the vital role Women-Owned Businesses (WOBs)play in advancing this legacy. These businesses not only fuel economic growth but also serve as platforms for empowerment, education, and inspiration.

The Legacy of Women-Owned Businesses

Women-owned businesses are more than economic entities—they are catalysts for change. Across industries, women entrepreneurs have demonstrated resilience, creativity, and a commitment to lifting others. Their contributions align seamlessly with the 2025 theme by:

  1. Educating Communities: Many women-owned businesses prioritize knowledge-sharing by offering educational resources, training programs, and workshops. For example:
  • STEM-focused enterprises owned by women are inspiring young girls to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and math.
  • Small business consultants help other women navigate entrepreneurship, creating a ripple effect of economic empowerment.
  • Mentoring the Next Generation: Women business leaders often serve as mentors, shaping the next generation of entrepreneurs, professionals, and leaders. Through internships, apprenticeships, and community outreach, they pass down invaluable lessons on resilience, innovation, and leadership.
  • Leading by Example: Women entrepreneurs inspire others by proving that success is attainable through hard work, innovation, and collaboration. Their stories motivate young women to dream big and overcome barriers.

Contributions of Women-Owned Businesses to the 2025 Theme

1.       Education as a Core Value: Women-owned businesses are driving change by integrating education into their missions. For instance:

  • Women in Tech Startups: Female founders in the tech industry are actively promoting coding boot camps and digital literacy programs for underserved communities.
  • Sustainability Entrepreneurs: Women in green businesses educate consumers about sustainable living, creating a ripple effect of environmental awareness.

These efforts exemplify the theme’s call for “educating and inspiring generations,” as they not only address present challenges but also prepare future leaders to tackle those yet to come.

2.       Mentorship as a Business Model: Mentorship is a cornerstone of many women-owned enterprises. Programs like formal mentorship networks and entrepreneurial incubators run by women focus on uplifting emerging talent. Notable examples include:

  • Veteran-Owned Women’s Businesses: These businesses often mentor fellow veterans transitioning to civilian careers, creating a support system that extends far beyond professional development.
  • Women’s Business Collectives: Collaborative groups of women entrepreneurs share resources, knowledge, and opportunities, fostering collective success.

3. Creating Opportunities Through Leadership

Leadership in women-owned businesses extends beyond profits. It includes advocating for workplace diversity, championing equal pay, and creating inclusive environments where employees can thrive. These values inspire and educate future leaders about the importance of equity and collaboration.

Overcoming Challenges to Move Forward Together

While the accomplishments of women-owned businesses are worth celebrating, their journey is not without obstacles. Challenges such as access to funding, navigating male-dominated industries, and balancing work-life responsibilities persist. However, the resilience of women entrepreneurs is unmatched. They continue to rise above these barriers by building support networks, leveraging certifications like WOSB (Women-Owned Small Business), and creating inclusive spaces that uplift others.

Their perseverance mirrors the spirit of “Moving Forward Together”, as they bring their communities along with them, ensuring no one is left behind.

Spotlight: Inspiring Women-Owned Businesses

  • Women in Education Consulting: Women-owned firms dedicated to reshaping education systems are providing tools and training for teachers, enhancing educational outcomes for underserved students.
  • Innovative Startups in Health and Wellness: Female entrepreneurs in the health industry are designing programs to improve mental and physical well-being, emphasizing self-care and community health.
  • Creative Enterprises: From women-led publishing houses to digital media firms, these businesses are sharing powerful narratives that celebrate diversity and inspire change.

How to Support Women-Owned Businesses During National Women’s History Month

  1. Shop Women-Owned: Use directories to find and support women-owned businesses in your area or online.
  • Share Their Stories: Amplify the voices of women entrepreneurs by sharing their successes and challenges on social media.
  • Mentor or Sponsor: If you’re an established professional, consider mentoring a woman entrepreneur or sponsoring a women-owned initiative.
  • Collaborate: Partner with women-owned businesses to build stronger, more inclusive communities.

National Women’s History Month 2025 reminds us that progress is a collective effort. Women-owned businesses exemplify the theme, “Moving Forward Together! Women Educating & Inspiring Generations,”by serving as educators, mentors, and leaders who empower others to succeed. As we celebrate this month, let us not only honor their achievements but also commit to supporting their ongoing efforts to create a brighter, more inclusive future for all.

In the spirit of moving forward together, let us continue to champion women entrepreneurs who inspire and educate generations to come.
